Licensing and the free trial

Rivoli Diagrams starts with a free trial of every feature. Afterwards the app keeps working: a license is needed only for a small set of professional output formats.

The first time you launch the app, a welcome sheet offers to start your trial. The trial is free and asks for nothing: no account, no email address, no card.

  • Start Free Trial begins the trial. While it is active, every feature of the app is available; the licensing screen shows the date it ends.
  • Activate License is for a copy you have already purchased.
  • Continue Without a License (or ⎋) closes the sheet and lets you work straight away. Everything except the licensed formats below works without a trial or a license, so an unreachable network never stops you from diagramming.

When the trial is about to end, the status bar says so when you open a document. When it has ended, the app keeps working and only the licensed formats switch off.

Exactly three capabilities need an active license or trial:

  • PDF export
  • SVG export
  • Visio (.vsdx) import

Everything else never asks for a license: opening, viewing, editing and saving documents, every drawing and arranging feature, PNG export, printing, and the other importers. Your documents are yours in every state.

When a licensed format is refused, the app says which format needs the license and offers a route to the licensing screen: the export sheet shows the reason and disables Export, and the one-click ribbon exports and the Visio importer explain themselves in an alert before any file dialog opens. See Importing and exporting.

Rivoli Diagrams ▸ Licensing… opens the licensing screen. It lists the available plans (monthly or annual) with their current prices, and a note worth repeating here: checkout opens in your default browser, and no payment details are ever entered in the app.

Complete the purchase in the browser and the app activates by itself when you return. If that handoff cannot complete (the link expired, or the service was unreachable at that moment), the app says so and tells you what to do instead, using the license key from your confirmation email.

Licensing problems appear as a notice above the canvas, never as an interruption. Dismissing the notice in one window dismisses it everywhere.

NoticeWhat it means
There is a problem with your paymentYour subscription is in its grace period. Everything keeps working while you sort the payment out; Fix Billing… takes you to the billing portal.
Your license expires soonThis Mac has not been able to check in with the licensing service, so the license will stop granting paid features on the named date. Your documents are not affected. Going online resolves it.
Your subscription has endedOpening, viewing, editing, saving and PNG export all keep working. Renewing restores PDF and SVG export and Visio import.

On the licensing screen, Already bought? Recover your license asks for the email you purchased with and sends recovery instructions to it. Nothing about your purchase is revealed in the app itself: the answer is the same whether or not the address has a purchase, so the email is the only place the details appear.

Rivoli Diagrams ▸ Manage Subscription… works the same way for billing: enter your email and a secure management link is sent to it. The menu item is available while your subscription is active or in its grace period.

Help ▸ Copy Licensing Diagnostics copies a short, plain-text licensing summary to the clipboard for a support request: the license state, identifiers and timestamps, one per line. It never contains your license key, your email address, or anything else secret, so it is safe to paste into an email. It reads only what the app already knows; nothing is sent anywhere.
